My work is non-directive, meaning that I don't tell you what to do or how to live your life. It's your life, and you're in charge! Even if you feel lost and clueless, I trust that you know best, and it is my job to help you work that out. My aim when working with clients is to help you feel empowered, to help you learn to trust yourself. I work alongside you to help you figure out your situation and how to make lasting changes that will help you to manage your emotions and feel at peace.
For me, the most important part of the therapeutic process is learning to be kinder to yourself. Change has to come from a place of self-compassion- you can't bully yourself into feeling happier! I am also really passionate about the importance of psychoeducation- that is, helping people understand their mental health and why they think and feel they way they do. For many people, this is the first step towards being kinder to themselves, as they recognise that how they feel isn't all their fault, and helps them figure out what they can do to make positive changes.
Much of my work with clients usually entails simply talking, however I enjoy working creatively with clients, whether that is through art, crafts or writing. I understand from both a professional and personal perspective that counselling can feel really intimidating at first, and I work really hard to create a non-intimidating environment. I often find that, when appropriate, humour can really help to feel people feel at ease! Although I take my work with clients very seriously, I believe there is space for all emotions in the counselling room, and a light-hearted approach has its place at times.
