About Me

About Me

Hi, I'm Jen

I'm a BACP registered counsellor and psychotherapist based in Salford, Greater Manchester.

I began my counselling training back in 2015 after a particularly tough couple of years, during which I sought support with my mental health. I'd had counselling years before as a teenager, but it hadn't really helped- I wasn't ready. Fast forward a decade though, and I tried again. It changed my life.

With the patient and empathic encouragement of my counsellor, I began my journey towards understanding how my past had informed my present, and that helped me to be kinder and more forgiving towards myself. Up until then I had been my own worst enemy! I'd felt broken and ashamed, but she helped me to recognise that beating myself up wasn't helping anyone, especially myself.

I'm still on that journey- counselling is no quick 'fix'. But I now know that I don't need to be fixed- I'm not broken. I don't believe that anyone is.

How do I work with clients?

My work is non-directive, meaning that I don't tell you what to do or how to live your life. It's your life, and you're in charge! Even if you feel lost and clueless, I trust that you know best, and it is my job to help you work that out. My aim when working with clients is to help you feel empowered, to help you learn to trust yourself. I work alongside you to help you figure out your situation and how to make lasting changes that will help you to manage your emotions and feel at peace.

For me, the most important part of the therapeutic process is learning to be kinder to yourself. Change has to come from a place of self-compassion- you can't bully yourself into feeling happier! I am also really passionate about the importance of psychoeducation- that is, helping people understand their mental health and why they think and feel they way they do. For many people, this is the first step towards being kinder to themselves, as they recognise that how they feel isn't all their fault, and helps them figure out what they can do to make positive changes.

Much of my work with clients usually entails simply talking, however I enjoy working creatively with clients, whether that is through art, crafts or writing. I understand from both a professional and personal perspective that counselling can feel really intimidating at first, and I work really hard to create a non-intimidating environment. I often find that, when appropriate, humour can really help to feel people feel at ease! Although I take my work with clients very seriously, I believe there is space for all emotions in the counselling room, and a light-hearted approach has its place at times.
