Person- centered counselling

My core training is in a type of psychotherapy called Person-centred counselling. It is a humanistic type of talking therapy, meaning that it focuses on the person rather than the "problem". It is non-directive, meaning you are in charge! I won't tell you what to do or dictate how you should think.

Person-centred therapy was founded in the 1940s by the American psychologist Carl Rogers who believed that, given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true and authentic  self. The counsellor facilitates this process by creating the right conditions needed for positive growth, which include empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard.

How can counselling help?

One of the foundations of person-centred therapy is the belief that we are the ‘expert’ of ourselves, even if sometimes it really doesn’t feel that way! Working with a counsellor can help you to develop the self-awareness, resilience and self-compassion you need to start to trust your own instincts and capabilities.

With support from your counsellor, you can begin to feel empowered enough to bring about the positive changes you would like to see in yourself and your situation.

What is a counselling session like?

You are in charge! Person-centred therapy is non-directive, so I won't tell you what to do or what you need to talk about. You are free to explore whatever is on your mind at that time. That's not to say you have to do all the work- through gently challenging your thoughts and ideas, I can help you to understand yourself and your situations more deeply, and help you to figure out when and why certain thoughts and feelings might not be serving you well.

Many clients are happy to simply talk during our sessions. Others prefer to express themselves in different ways, such as through art or writing, and I am happy to explore this with you. When appropriate, I can guide you through mindfulness and meditation exercises, if this is something that you are comfortable with.

Sessions will be held in a dedicated and private counselling space in my home, situated on a quiet residential cul-de-sac in Swinton, Salford. Street parking is available and I am in easy reach of public transport. Please note that the room is upstairs.
